First off I am writing these
instructions for the beginner so if I offend anyone I apologize in
advance. Lets start with what you will need.
1.
A boat with a fish finder and good rod holders. 2.
Medium to medium heavy rods 6'-7' with high capacity reels.( I will
recommend specific models later) 3. The ability
to interpret your depth finder in manual mode to distinguish between
trees and fish. 4. Be able to troll at 2.3-2.5
mph (this is the speed I think works best, I check mine with a hand
held gps)
First thing you are going to need is your rod and reel set up
correctly. I use a seven foot medium action rod and a PENN 330 reel.
I spool it with 100 YDS of mono then 100 yds of 27# lead core line
then a twenty pound mono leader tied to the TROLL BABY. Be sure you
have a good strong rod holder to put it in! The TROLLBABY works
great with downriggers too but that's another story.
Each Troll Baby is now shipped ready to fish right out of the package.
I have recently made two changes. I replaced the 1/2 oz jighead with a
1/4 one that has a larger and stronger 4/0 hook. I also removed the snap swivel
from the leader and now hook directly to the jighead. Both of these revisons makes
the "Troll Baby" better than ever.
If you are using downriggers or dipsy divers the jig adds no
value so use the hook. Each package comes with one extra baby body
as well.
VERY Important once you decide how you want to use
it CRIMP THE LEADER CLOSED!!! I have never broke one of these
leaders they are special order 30# wire leaders however I have had
the snap fail!!! SO CRIMP IT CLOSED PLEASE!!! |
Now locate the fish you want
to target and do a pass to make
sure there are no TREES!!!! (Troll Babies HATE trees).
I use the formula , for every color (30 feet) in the water at
2.3 mph gets you 4' deep with the lure and leader.Example you want
to fish at 20' ,5 colors, simple. For those of you unfamiliar with
lead core it comes in 100 or 200 yard spools and every 10 yards is a
different color. Hint: make a cheat sheet for each rod so you know
which color is which. Like color 6 is green 7 is black this is real
handy when using two rods I carry three pre rigged one as a backup
so I never have to stop fishing to make a repair or change a leader
out. Change the leader or shorten after every two or three fish.
Now this is the most important part, ease the troll baby in the
water and make sure it is running correctly and LOOSEN the drag.
slowly let the line out stopping it every now and then so it doesn't
sink too fast. If all of the sudden your line starts peeling out
really fast. you are either hung up or most likely have a fish on.
This is why I said to have the drag set lightly. I have caught a lot
of fish when letting out and the first time it happens to you it
will scare the heck out of you so be prepared mentally.
I usually do not try to take it right down in their face 4'-6'
above is usually fine. If you are working some stripers and you have
fished above them and right down in there face and not getting much
results most likely it is a time of day problem.
I have the
luxury of living on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina and have used
this as my exclusive trolling lure for the last five years.I have
had days that I KNOW I am on them and just for example it is 1 pm
and I am not getting it done, come back at 5 pm and really do well!
One day they tear up my my chartreuse model and wont touch the white
one, next day just the opposite, that's fishing. There are some
aspects to fishing none of us will ever figure out , Stars, moon.
generation at the dam, recreational boaters, wind, you name it.
I do know this, if you use the "TROLL BABY" and get it near
feeding or hungry Stripers you will catch fish and occasionally two
at once!!!
